President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday urged the Armed Forces of the Philippines to remain undeterred by tensions and continue improving its readiness to face "current and emerging threats."

In his speech during the 88th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Camp Aguinaldo, Marcos reiterated the government's commitment to asserting territorial rights "in accordance with the Philippine Constitution and international law."

Marcos also acknowledged the AFP's crucial role in safeguarding the country's security amidst geopolitical tensions and internal threats.

He commended their "voice of reason" in navigating complex international disputes and their "firm resolve" in protecting territorial integrity.

"As you continue to play a vital role in the government's various initiatives, it is my fervent hope that your institution will remain relentless in countering lawless elements that intend to sow fear and distrust amongst our people," Marcos said.

President Marcos pointed to recent controversies involving the AFP Chief of Staff as "demonstrations of Filipino courage against coercion and our firm resolve to protect, preserve and uphold our territorial integrity."

Despite attempts at propagation, the Philippines, through the AFP, remains a force for reason," Marcos said. "We shall continue to assert our rights in accordance with the Constitution and international law."

Marcos cited the recent incident involving AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. as a "proud demonstration of Filipino courage" against coercion.

This is after Brawner was on board the wooden boat that came under the Chinese Coast Guard's water cannon attack while on the way to a resupply mission in Ayungin Shoal earlier this month.

Marcos also emphasized the need for the AFP to remain "undeterred" and "improve its readiness" to face both current and emerging threats.

Pledging government support, Marcos outlined plans to bolster the AFP's external defense capabilities and strengthen existing alliances with foreign counterparts. He also encouraged the exploration of new partnerships based on shared goals and values.

The President also expressed his utmost appreciation for the awardees recognized for their dedication, courage, and exemplary service. He announced plans to increase the lifetime monthly gratuity for Medal of Valor awardees, a tangible gesture of gratitude for their heroism.

"This will provide our heroes with a meaningful reward, highlighting our commitment to support and honor our war heroes," Marcos said.

Looking ahead, Marcos emphasized the AFP's critical role in achieving his vision of a "Bagong Pilipinas" (New Philippines). He expressed confidence that the military's excellence and selfless service would propel the nation towards a brighter future.

"I look forward to more decades of the AFP's excellent and selfless service to the nation," Marcos said.
