President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said that overseas Filipino workers have significantly contributed to the Philippines' social and economic development.
In his speech during the OFW Day in Pasay, Marcos acknowledged the sacrifices made by both the workers abroad and their loved ones back home.
"The contribution of our OFWs is truly significant," Marcos said. "It's not just about remittances and economic assistance but also about the skills and knowledge they bring back, enriching our workforce," he added.
Marcos also lauded Filipino workers' resilience, skill, and dedication abroad, calling them "true examples of modern Filipino workers."
He urged everyone to embrace the spirit of a modern Filipino, united in building "a strong, prosperous, and opportunistic nation for every Filipino."
"With your continued solidarity, I am confident that we can build a New Philippines for Filipinos, now and for the generations to come," the President said.
Marcos then mentioned the government's commitment to supporting OFWs, citing initiatives like establishing the One Repatriation Command Center and its 24/7 hotline (1348) for emergency assistance, legal support, and counseling.
Additionally, the President outlined various programs aimed at facilitating the reintegration of returning OFWs, including livelihood training, financial literacy workshops, and business development loans.
"These initiatives aim to prepare you for the changing world," Marcos told the OFWs. "We want to equip you with the skills to navigate new technologies and methods," he added.
Recognizing the challenges faced by OFW families, the President also underscored the government's efforts to provide for their needs through programs like the OFW Children Circle, educational scholarships, and the newly opened OFW Hospital in Pampanga.
"There are more projects in progress, and we'll continue to enhance existing programs," Marcos assured the audience. "I hope you make the most of these benefits."
Looking towards the future, the President expressed his vision for a Philippines where overseas work becomes an optional path, rather than a necessity.
