More than 5,000 passengers are now stranded at the Manila North Port Passenger Terminal due to tropical storm "Kabayan."
In his inspection at the said port on Monday morning, Coast Guard Public Affairs Service acting commander CG Rear Admiral Armando Balilo said a total of 5,400 are currently barred to sail, as 2GO vessels were halted to journey to the cities of Cebu, Butuan, Tagbilaran and Cagayan de Oro.
In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was hoisted over more than 30 areas, however, said that "Kabayan" has already weakened into a tropical depression on Monday morning after making landfall in Davao Oriental.
For her part, Philippine Ports Authority spokesperson Eunice Samonte said some passengers were allowed to embark on their respective vessels for passengers to have comfort while waiting for their vessels to sail.
The PPA also distributed hot porridge to stranded passengers.
In a separate press conference on Monday afternoon, Sharon Ngo, business unit head-Sea Solutions of 2GO, confirmed that their four vessels are currently barred from sailing in various areas in the Visayas and Mindanao because of the tropical storm warning.
"Our fully booked vessels that were suspended to sail due to typhoon Kabayan were set to sail last Sunday. Unfortunately, due to the typhoon, their sailing was suspended by the PCG. The passengers are well taken care of and they are comfortable right now," Ngo said, adding that the vessels will sail immediately if the storm signal warning was lifted by authorities.
