Lanterns keep Pinoy Yule bright

Forced to relocate from the cherished spot on Finlandia, where the stall had illuminated the season’s nights since 2007, LAC Lantern’s absence created a void in the hearts of those who cherished its craftsmanship.

As Yuletide cheer envelops the Philippine archipelago, the streets of bustling metropolises transform into mesmerizing canvases adorned with an array of star-shaped luminates known as "parols."

These traditional Filipino lanterns, symbolic of the festive season, hold a cherished place in the hearts of many.

Among the myriad stalls dotting the labyrinthine alleys of the National Capital Region, one stands out in radiant display along Finlandia Street in Makati City.

At this radiant stall, the artistry of Mark Orig and his venture, LAC Lantern, illuminates the thoroughfare.

With deft hands and a creative spirit, Mark, a parol maker and co-owner, showcases a symphony of materials that constitute resplendent creations: delicate Capiz shells, sturdy copper, and supple bamboo sticks interlaced to birth these iconic symbols of Christmas joy.

Each has a story

"Each parol holds a story woven with Capiz shells, a rarity in our craft, paired with the resilience of copper and the natural grace of bamboo," Mark shares, his eyes gleaming with pride as he discusses the unique fusion of materials. The mastery lies not merely in crafting these lanterns but in the customization offered to clients, particularly churches wishing to adorn their halls with bespoke designs that evoke the spirit of the season.

"Churches often seek our expertise in crafting parols that resonate with their congregation," Mark says, underscoring the significance of their creations in adorning sacred spaces during the holiday season.

However, Mark's journey as a full-time parol maker faced an unexpected challenge when his stall fell victim to a local clearing operation.

Forced to relocate from the cherished spot along Finlandia, where the stall had illuminated the season's nights since 2007, LAC Lantern's absence created a void in the hearts of those who cherished their craftsmanship.

The store, however, recently returned to its former site.

"Our return to Finlandia on 26 October marked a resurgence—a rekindling of our passion amidst adversity," Mark says, his resolve mirroring the resilience depicted in the glowing radiance of his parols against the backdrop of darkness.

Yet, beyond the traditional artistry lies an evolution—a reimagining of parol making.

Innovation fuels art

Across the Philippines, contemporary Filipino artists and designers embrace innovation, infusing these age-old symbols with modernity.

Some artists, inspired by technology and driven by a desire to honor tradition, are experimenting with novel materials and groundbreaking designs, pushing the boundaries while preserving the soul of the parol.

Mark's story embodies the delicate balance between tradition and innovation—a testament to the enduring spirit of Filipino artistry.

As the season unfolds and the streets twinkle with these celestial lanterns, each parol stands not just as a symbol of Christmas but as a beacon of resilience, craftsmanship, and the unwavering Filipino spirit.
