A Quezon City police operation turned deadly Thursday night when a robbery suspect allegedly opened fire on officers, forcing them to retaliate and kill him.
Quezon City Police District chief P/Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan on Friday identified the slain suspect as Jerome Tangalan Vela, 24, of Barangay Bagong Silangan.
A police report said the incident started earlier that day when one Annabel Raijab reported a home robbery at 4 p.m. in Barangay Bagong Silangan.
Raijab claimed that Vela, along with Jommel Caparoso Tabuñar, 27, of the same barangay, entered her house and stole her valuables.
Officers from the Payatas Bagong Silangan Police Station tracked down and arrested Tabuñar at 8 p.m. at his residence, where they recovered the stolen items.
Late Thursday night, armed with information from a concerned citizen, police conducted another follow-up operation in Covenant Village, Barangay Bagong Silangan, where they spotted Vela.
As officers approached him, Vela reportedly drew a handgun and fired, prompting police to return fire, fatally wounding him.
Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered from the deceased a .38-caliber revolver with four live rounds, one fired cartridge case; and three fired 9mm cartridges from the scene, the later apparently from shots taken by the police.
"I commend the operatives for their prompt response. The QCPD is committed to maintaining peace and order in the City and ensuring the safety of all Qcitizens," Maranan said.
