Three persons were injured while around 50 informal settler families lost their homes to a fire that took firefighters to control in three hours early Monday.
Quezon City Fire Marshal Sr. Supt. Ian Guerrero identified the injured fire victims as Mark Eugene Ariaso, 17, who suffered minor abrasion at his right thigh while saving their belongings; Cymore Decalay, 47, who sustained a laceration on her left knee and John Carlos Saliling, 29, who was mauled nearly to death by his neighbors who suspected that he deliberately causes the fire.
Guerrero said the fire broke out at Unit 7 Upper Nawasa, Barangay Commonwealth, where Saliling reside. The blaze started around 3 a.m. and believed to have cause by unattended candle since the house has no electricity.
Firefighters had hard time containing the blaze because of narrow alleys leading to it, as it quickly spread to shanties made of light materials.
Fire Inspector Belmore Bringas Jr., on the other hand, said Saliling's neighbor pointed to the suspect because of an earlier attempt, as the house owner is a known drug user in their area.
The fire reaches the third alarm where a dozen fire trucks are required to respond to a fire that was only put out after three hours.
Guerrero said arson investigation is still ongoing while Saliling was taken into custody by the police.
