Land Transportation Office chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II personally led the kickoff of the agency's motor vehicle registration caravan in Quezon City on Saturday.
The initiative aims to encourage owners of the estimated 24.7 million unregistered vehicles in the country to renew their registrations.
The caravan, part of the "Oplan Balik Rehistro, Be Road Ready" program, was launched in response to data revealing that around 65 percent of motor vehicles nationwide have expired registrations.
"Through this program, we, at the LTO, want to show that we're not just about enforcement," Mendoza said. "We're also committed to making our services fast and convenient for the public. This caravan is designed to bring LTO services closer to our clients."
Under the guidance of Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, the caravan will also facilitate renewals of expired driver's licenses.
"Many of our kababayans work from Monday to Friday and don't have time to renew their licenses because they're busy and don't want to lose a day's pay," Mendoza explained.
He added that the caravan will people the opportunity to renew their licenses outside of work hours, with the LTO coming directly to their communities.
In its first day in Quezon City, the caravan facilitated the renewal of 56 driver's licenses and the registration of 24 delinquent motor vehicles within the first few hours.
In addition to the caravan, Mendoza has instructed regional directors and district office heads to establish priority lanes for the registration of delinquent vehicles.
"We expect more vehicle owners to register their vehicles in the coming days due to this nationwide program," Mendoza concluded.
