PNP beefs up security for the holidays

The Philippine National Police assured the public on Thursday that it is taking proactive steps to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday season, especially in light of recent events in Mindanao and the circulation of bomb threat emails.

In a televised public briefing, PNP spokesperson for the P/Col. Jean Fajardo said that PNP chief Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr. has directed regional commanders to intensify security measures, particularly around places of worship, transportation hubs, and other areas where large crowds are expected.

Fajardo said that police visibility will be maximized, with a focus on "target-hardening measures" and an "active stance."

Starting 15 December, police leave will be suspended to ensure sufficient manpower during this critical period.

"It's been a practice in the PNP that before Simbang Gabi starts, leaves are indeed canceled, and our police officers understand this," Fajardo said. "However, in case of emergencies, allowances can be made."

The PNP also urges the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities they may observe. This includes unattended bags, unusual behavior, or suspicious individuals.

"During our Chief PNP's rounds, he spoke with security managers and guards, reminding them to inspect bags and observe people displaying suspicious behavior actively," Fajardo said.

She also appealed to the public not to open any unattended bags and inform the security officers who will promptly respond with the PNP as she also cautioned the public against sharing unverified information and spreading false bomb threats to avoid unnecessary panic.
