Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to review the amnesty proclamations for former communist rebels, which she
described as an "agreement with the devil."
She stressed that while she supports the peace process, the grant of amnesty to the former rebels, especially communists, would not achieve peace in the country.
"Mr. President, the government's statement with the NDFP in Oslo was an agreement with the devil," the Vice President said, referring to the Oslo Joint Communique with National Democratic Front of the Philippines, the political arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
The CPP and NDFP have as their armed component the New People's Army.
"We have proven in history that they are not serious and they have no sincerity in peace talks. They will use this peace negotiation to betray the government and deceive the people," Duterte said.
"We appeal to your power to review these proclamations and agreements," she added, in her speech at the 5th founding anniversary of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.
Marcos recently issued proclamations granting amnesty to communist rebels and others who had gone against the government.
She said the President should consider and honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives protecting communities from the bloody attacks of the NPA.
"Mr. President, we can negotiate for peace and reconciliation and pursue meaningful development efforts in the Philippines without capitulating to the enemies," the VP stressed.
