Four individuals allegedly involved in "rent-tangay" scheme, were nabbed by joint operatives of the Quezon City Police District's Novaliches Police Station and the District Anti-Carnapping Unit over the weekend.

QCPD director P/Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan identified the suspects as Carlo Edrian Duran Maldo, Mark Jason Vallega Josue and Joel Tumala Jasareno, all residents of Tondo, Manila; and Richard Rosel Cuason, a resident of Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Maranan said that on 28 November 2023, Maldo, posing as a customer, rented a motor vehicle owned by Aljory Morales for two days and despite repeated reminders and demands from the owner, Maldo failed to return the vehicle. Morales tried to locate her vehicle through the GPS installed; however, the GPS malfunctioned.

Subsequently, she discovered Maldo's various "rent-tangay" modus posts on Facebook, prompting her to seek assistance from Novaliches Police Station for the possible recovery of her vehicle and the apprehension of the suspects.

Acting on the information, operatives from the District Anti-Carnapping Unit and PS 4 conducted a follow-up operation along General Luis Street, Barangay Nova Proper.

Upon arrival, the owner positively identified her black Toyota Vios with plate number DAV3417. The operatives approached the vehicle, instructed all suspects to alight in it, and requested the pertinent documents.

However, the suspects failed to present any documentation, leading to their immediate arrest and the recovery of the vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects collaborated in a "rent-tangay" scheme, with Maldo acting as the renter and leader, Josue being the one who looked for buyers, Cuason providing fictitious documents and Jasareno serving as the driver.

The suspects will be charged with violations of RA 10883, or the New Anti-Carnapping Law of 2016, before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office.
