The Department of Migrant Workers reported Saturday that about 124 overseas Filipino workers from Lebanon have sought for repatriation.
DMW Officer-in-Charge Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed that the Philippine Embassy in Beirut recommended the "voluntary repatriation" of Filipinos living in Lebanon in light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict between the borders of Israel and Hezbollah.
According to Cacdac, the agency is already exerting efforts to make certain of the arrival of the OFWs "as soon as possible."
"We will soon repatriate the first batch from Lebanon," Cacdac said.
"There is no specific date yet but we're looking at the possibility of this coming week that there will be repatriates from there," he added.
The OIC added that the government is in coordination with the Israeli defense forces to locate the two missing Filipinos in Israel.
"We're hoping that they would be found," Cacdac said.
More than half of the estimated 220 hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza holds foreign passports, according to the Israeli authorities, as per Reuters report on 26 October. This includes two from the Philippines.
The Israeli Embassy in Manila said on Friday the two remaining missing Filipinos in Israel were likely kidnapped by the Hamas group.
Meanwhile, Cacdac assured that the government is prepared in case the Israel-Hamas conflict worsens.
He stresses that the DMW is prepared to assist OFWs, adding that crisis and backup procedures are already in place.
"If these latest developments will have an effect on our fellow countrymen, rest assured that we are already exhausting all efforts," Cacdac said.
