Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte emphasized the crucial role literacy plays in unlocking opportunities, empowering individuals, and driving the country forward.
Duterte said the Department of Education is pushing hard for literacy development through various programs and initiatives.
"Our goal is to promote functional literacy and ensure that every Filipino possesses the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today's complex world," she said in her keynote address during the 2023 National Literacy Conference in Cebu City.
Functional literacy, according to her, goes beyond simply reading and writing.
"It encompasses the skills necessary to apply this knowledge in real-life situations. It equips individuals with the ability to make informed decisions, communicate effectively, and actively participate in the workforce and society," she added.
Duterte said DepEd has taken significant steps to enhance functional literacy across all levels of education.
Among the key initiatives undertaken by DepEd, she said, were the recent revision of the Kindergarten to Grade 10 curriculum, the implementation of Alternative Learning Systems program, and teacher training and development programs.
Duterte also said that DepEd is actively collaborating with various organizations and stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to promote functional literacy.
