Fifteen more candidates in the 30 October Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections had been recommended for disqualification as of Thursday, the Commission on Elections said yesterday.
The Anti-Epal Task Force reported that 122 candidates had been recommended for disqualification for allegedly violating Section 80 of the Omnibus Election Code prohibiting premature campaigning.
A total of 212 show-cause orders had also been issued for verified complaints, according to the Comelec. Of the 122 disqualification cases, 33 had been raffled, 49 summonses had been served and 40 more summonses are being prepared by the poll body.
For unverified complaints, the Comelec task force had issued 5,980 show-cause orders, for which 2,727 answers were received. For the verified complaints, 148 subpoenas had been served.
Meanwhile, 520 complaints had been dropped while 300 possible disqualification cases are being looked into.
Meanwhile, Manila Police District chief P/Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon issued a warning over reports that barangay officials seeking reelection in the 160 barangays of the capital city's District 4 would resort to hiring "bulong watchers."
The "bulong watchers" would reportedly try to coax and coach voters into who to vote for in exchange for money, according to reports that reached Dizon's office.
The Comelec allows only two watchers per candidate per precinct.
Dizon said he has given an order to all of his 14 station heads to make sure that elections would be orderly, credible and untainted by cheating and vote buying.
The BSKE candidates in the 160 barangays in Manila's 4th District signed a peace covenant at the Our Lady of Loreto Parish Church in Sampaloc, Manila on Friday.
The event was officiated by parish priest Eric Adoviso, Comelec officer-in-charge for District 4 Atty. Edison Teodoro, and MPD Station 4 commander P/Lt. Col. Salvador Tanggol.
