President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. congratulated the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team for bagging the gold medal at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.
Marcos sent his congratulatory message in a Twitter post shortly after Gilas prevailed over a tough Jordan squad, 70-60.
"I know every Filipino is proud to be called one today. Congratulations, Gilas Pilipinas, on this incredible feat! Your hard work continues to elevate Filipino athleticism and sportsmanship in the global arena," Marcos said in his tweet.
Gilas Pilipinas' triumph marked the end of a 61-year title drought for the Philippines.
The last time the national team won a gold medal in the Asian Games was 1962 in Jakarta, where it defeated China to cop its fourth straight crown in the continental tournament.
Naturalized player Justin Brownlee led Gilas with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while Ange Kouame added 14 markers and 11 boards in a strong effort. Chris Newsome employed an airtight defense on the prolific Rondae Hollis-Jefferson to underscore the Filipinos' dominance on both ends.
High morale lifts team
Gilas coach Tim Cone said the morale of Gilas Pilipinas was further uplifted following their miraculous 77-76 victory over host China in the semifinals.
"We caught Jordan on a bad shooting night, and we were kinda hoping that they would shoot the ball so well. I thought we did a good job covering Rondae and not letting him get too many looks. Our guys were really ready for tonight," Cone said.
Marcos, likewise, congratulated Annie Ramirez for securing the Philippines' 3rd gold with an impressive victory in the 57-kg women's Jiu-jitsu at the 19th Asian Games.
"Your dedication and triumph exemplify the Filipino spirit of excellence," he said.
