Jim Jordan, a hard-right Republican, received former US President Donald Trump's support on Friday (Saturday in Manila) for the speakership of the House of Representatives.
Jordan "will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement," Trump declared on his Truth Social platform.
He had earlier offered to temporarily fill the position after Republican Kevin McCarthy was removed from office this week in a historic uprising by far-right members of his party.
Among the candidates to succeed McCarthy is 59-year-old Jordan, who has expressed notable skepticism regarding US assistance to Ukraine. A probe into President Joe Biden's impeachment had also been led by Jordan, which has irked his mainstream colleagues.
In a previous interview with Fox News, Donald Trump claimed that he had "been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress."
"If they don't get the vote, they have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer-term, because I am running for president."
But former Republican congresswoman Barbara Comstock told CNN that Trump would not be eligible for the role because he has been charged with criminal offenses.
"Unfortunately he doesn't know the House rules, which say if you're indicted, you cannot be in House leadership," Comstock said.
Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is slated to go on trial in Washington next March for allegedly conspiring to subvert the results of the November 2020 election won by Democrat Biden.
Trump is also facing charges of racketeering in Georgia for allegedly plotting to rig the results of the state's election, and he will stand trial in Florida in May 2024 for allegedly handling top-secret government documents improperly.
Additionally, a civil fraud trial is currently underway in New York against Trump and his two eldest sons for inflating the value of their real estate holdings in order to qualify for better insurance and bank loan terms.
