World facing climate emergency, Lula warns

The planet is facing an "unprecedented climate emergency" with the frequent droughts, floods, storms and fires, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva warned world leaders at the Group of 20 Summit in New Delhi, India on Saturday.

In his address, Lula blamed the emergency to the "lack of commitment to the environment."

G20 leaders could not yet agree on a common action to the crisis. Expectations of an agreement at the COP28 climate talks in November are also low.

The United Arab Emirates is hosting the climate talks.

In July, G20 energy ministers failed to even mention coal in their final statement, let alone agree a phase down roadmap, and there was no progress on the renewables goal.

G20 countries account for 85 percent of global gross domestic product and a similar amount of global climate warming emissions, making action in the forum crucial to real progress.
