There is no law prohibiting barangay officials from continuing to perform their official duties even if it gives them undue advantage over their rivals in the upcoming Barangay Elections, as confirmed by the Commission on Election, according to Senator Francis Tolentino.
In a radio interview, Comelec chairperson George Garcia said the village officers can continue to perform their functions amid preparations for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on 30 October.
Overlapping not allowed
Garcia said the Comelec will only prevent some of the 42,027 barangay officials nationwide from performing their duties and responsibilities until their terms end on 1 November.
Hence, Tolentino said their official functions as incumbent village officers should not overlap the status of reelectionists upon providing basic services to the people.
"This clarification from Comelec is important as barangay officials are mandated to deliver effective health services and maintain peace and order in their respective constituencies," he added.
