The bicameral Commission on Appointments will kick off on 13 September its deliberations on the confirmation of Defense Secretary Gibo Teodoro for the post.
CA assistant minority leader, Johnny Pimentel of Surigao del Sur, announced on Sunday that the defense panel, chaired by Camiguin Rep. Jurdin Jesus Romualdo, will hold its confirmation hearing on Teodoro's ad interim appointment along with 24 newly promoted senior military officers.
Teodoro was appointed on 5 June by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., nearly one month after the appointment ban on defeated candidates from the May 2022 polls lapsed last 9 May of this year.
Teodoro is no stranger to the President. He was among the senatorial candidates of Marcos' UniTeam in last year's elections but lost in the senatorial race. In 2010, he ran for President but did not make it.
Consisting of 25 members from the Senate and the House of Representatives, the CA has the authority to reject political appointments of the President.
Teodoro first held the Defense chief position during the Arroyo administration. At the time, he also served as the head of the Office of Civil Defense.
He is also a former member of the House of Representatives, who represented the first district of Tarlac for three consecutive terms, from 1998 to 2007.
According to Pimentel, the CA's committee on foreign affairs chaired by Senator Jinggoy Estrada will also hold confirmation hearings on the nominations of Charlie Manangan as ambassador to Iraq and Kira Azucena, as resident ambassador to Niue, in addition to being ambassador to New Zealand.
Also, on the same day, the panel justice, headed by Senator Francis Tolentino, will hold a confirmation hearing on the appointment of Erlinda Uy as a regular member of the Judicial and Bar Council representing the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
Last week, the CA confirmed the ad interim appointment of Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines with the rank of four-star general and the nomination of 29 other generals, flag officers, and senior military officers.
