The annual gift-giving of the Duterte clan in Davao City has resumed this year with no less than Vice President Sara Duterte spearheading the distribution of "pahalipay" or joy packs to the Davaoeños.
Davao residents gathered in former President Rodrigo Duterte's ancestral home, where they were given grocery packs, breakfast and lunch packs, and gift coupons.
The Vice President underscored the importance of individuals practicing the three pillars of Christmas — love, forgiveness, and generosity — to live a peaceful life.
She added that these values would lead to people living in peace because people will forgive one another and share, particularly with those who cannot get anything during the festive season.
The family's yearly gift-giving tradition was resumed two years after it had been put on hold to prevent large gatherings in light of the threats posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Duterte family has been doing this as part of their Christmas tradition since the then-president became mayor in 1988, and it has grown in succeeding years.
Andriana Arcillas, 79, said she has been waiting near the venue since 1 p.m. Saturday just to personally thank the Vice President for the medication and burial assistance that they have been receiving from the Dutertes since 2015.
