Senator Christopher "Bong" Go's outreach team recently delivered relief goods to 748 flood victims in Valencia City, Bukidnon.
Go's team handed out masks, shirts, vitamins and snacks to recipients sheltering at the Barangay Lumbo covered court on 26 November. Select individuals were also given bicycles, cellular phones, shoes, umbrellas and balls for basketball and volleyball.
The senator also delivered his message to the beneficiaries through a video. He told the flood victims that he continues to urge his fellow lawmakers to support his bills creating the Department of Disaster Resilience and Mandatory Evacuation Centers to help disaster victims like them.
He has refiled Senate Bill 199 which establishes the DDR, a highly focused department that will proactively address calamity issues. The proposed agency will take charge of readying relief goods and evacuation before typhoon strikes, he said.
The DDR will also be responsible for restoring normalcy in disaster-stricken areas, Go added.
Go is also the author of SB 1228 or the proposed MEC Act. It establishes a dedicated evacuation center in every city, municipality and province, each fully-equipped to assist disaster victims.
'These structures will serve as the temporary homes of Filipinos when there is a typhoon or natural disaster," Go said.
The chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography further cited that there are 153 Malasakit Centers nationwide, including one at the nearby Bukidnon Provincial Hospital in Maramag, where people can obtain medical assistance from different government agencies.
