About 8,000 loose firearms had been seized by the police across the country in the past three months, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said yesterday.
Azurin Jr. said the weapons were confiscated at various checkpoints and from anti-illegal drug operations from 1 July to October 8, resulting in the arrest of 2,471 people.
All of those nabbed were charged with violating Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
In all, 8,255 unlicensed guns were seized or surrendered, while 4,895 firearms were turned in to the PNP for safekeeping.
"I have directed all police officers around the country to sustain its campaign against loose firearms and other lawless elements of society to keep the streets safe from criminals, especially this holiday season. One firearm confiscated can be equated to a minimum of one life saved," Azurin said.
