A 79-year-old woman was found dead embracing the family dog Saturday after a two-hour fire blamed on an exploding smartphone charger hit a residential neighborhood in Barangay 128, Gagalangin, Tondo in Manila.
Police and fire probers determined that Juanita Bitco and her dog succumbed to smoke suffocation from the fire that started at about 3 a.m. and was declared out just an hour later.
The fatality was said to be just visiting her two daughters and was supposed to go back to the province by the end of November. The daughters sustained burn injuries.
The "Lovers of Valdaro" refers to the skeletons of a couple in an embrace, face to face, discovered by archaeologists at a Neolithic tomb near Mantua, Italy, in 2007.
In Muntinlupa, a person was injured in a fire Friday that razed three houses in Barangay Bayanan.
The first alarm was raised at 4:40 p.m. with the fire put under control at 5:20 p.m. It was declared out at 5:39 p.m.
Three families of 10 individuals were affected by the fire. Damage to property was pegged by arson probers at P125,000.
