Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna on Monday expressed concern over the reported rise in the cases of young people committing suicide as she led activities in line with the National Children Welfare Month.
Lacuna said growing up problems, coupled with the difficulties brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, may be contributing to the failure of the youth to handle emotional rollercoaster rides.
On Sunday, a 13-year-old female student died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
During Monday's flag-raising ceremony at the Kartilya ng Katipunan near the city hall, Lacuna said depression and too much exposure to social media may be contributing to increasing suicide cases.
Without going into details, Lacuna said that since 2015, suicide had been the second most common reason of death among the youth, especially those in the 15 to 29 age group.
The mayor said the mobility restrictions and the lack of communication among family members arising from too much focus on technology and gadgets have been cited as factors by experts on why cases of depression have increased.
"This is our chance to focus on the welfare and concerns of our children," Lacuna said, adding the city has formed a council for the protection of children and young people.
The council is composed by representatives from the city welfare services, division of city schools, city prosecutor's office and the Manila police women's and children's protection desk.
Said council will collect data on the youth that will help the city council craft legislation that will address their problems.
Lacuna said Executive Order 40, entitled "Oplan Sagip", will effect the rescue of children subjected to abuses by their parents or relatives.
"This monthlong celebration will instill into our consciousness the need to protect the rights of children," Lacuna said.
