After attending the groundbreaking of two Super Health Centers in San Benito and Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, Sen. Bong Go on 30 September proceeded to Surigao City and personally provided assistance to struggling college students.
At the Provincial Convention Center, Go and his team handed out grocery packs, masks, vitamins, shirts and meals to 750 indigent students.
They also gave shoes, mobile phones, and watches to select individuals.
Go, chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, likewise provided bicycles, basketballs and volleyballs to motivate students to engage in sports activities and stay away from illegal drugs and other vices.
"Ang aking advocacy ngayon ay sports at health. Health para makarecover tayo sa pandemya. Sports para mailayo ang mga kabataan sa iligal na droga. Get into sports, stay away from drugs," he said in his speech.
"Huwag nating sayangin ang naumpisahan ni (dating) presidente (Rodrigo) Duterte, 'yung kanyang naumpisahan na labanan ang iligal na droga. Para iyan sa kinabukasan ng ating mga anak. Huwag nating sayangin. Kaya iyan ang isang paraan… get into sports, stay away from drugs. Ilayo natin ang kabataan sa iligal na droga," Go said.
He emphasized the need for the government to intensify its programs to further protect and empower the youth and provide them better access to quality education.
Go authored and co-sponsored Republic Act 11470 establishing the National Academy of Sports in 2020. The law is part of Go's vision to build an institute where promising young athletes can train while getting quality education.
Located at the New Clark City Sports Complex in Capas, Tarlac, NAS is a government-run academy aimed at developing the country's future athletes with a special curriculum on sports.
Go also urged eligible but unvaccinated students to get their complete vaccine and booster shots against Covid-19.
He als reminded the audience to remain vigilant and stay healthy since the virus is still around.
In line with his commitment to look after the well-being of every Filipino, Go offered assistance to those with health concerns and advised them to go to the Malasakit Centers at Caraga Regional Hospital in the city and Siargao Island Medical Center in Dapa.
Primarily authored and sponsored by Go, the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019 mandates all hospitals managed and administered by the Department of Health to establish their own Malasakit Centers to provide poor and indigent Filipinos convenient access to medical assistance programs by the government.
"Mayroon na tayong 152 na Malasakit Center sa buong Pilipinas, kasali ang Siargao. Ang Malasakit Center ay one-stop shop. Nasa loob na ng isang opisina ang apat na ahensya ng gobyerno – ang PhilHealth, PCSO, DOH, at DSWD na handang tumulong sa inyo hanggang maging zero balance ang inyong billing. Lapitan niyo lang, inyo 'yan, para 'yan sa Pilipino," Go said.
As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go remains committed to help boost the economic development and improve public service delivery in the city as he supported several projects, such as the construction of flood mitigation structures along Surigao River, the rehabilitation of several roads, and construction of causeway in Barangay Taft.
In the whole province, Go supported the construction of eight Super Health Centers, including those in San Benito, Del Carmen, Alegria, Claver, Dapa, General Luna, and another two in Surigao City.
