A man allegedly involved in treating wounded Abu Sayyaf members was killed when he shot it out with government forces who tried to arrest him in Lantawan, Basilan, police reported.
Killed was Kiram Appan, accused of robbery with homicide and listed as Lantawan’s 6th most wanted person, according to the PNP Special Action Force (SAF).
Members of the SAF’s 5th Special Action Battalion and Light Armor Unit, along with other police units and the Marines, carried out the operation against Appan on the night of September 3, in Brgy. Bulan-bulan.
Appan resisted arrest and fired on the operatives while trying to escape, prompting them to retaliate, the SAF said.
Operating troops recovered a caliber-.38 pistol and fired cartridges at the scene.
Appan, who goes by the aliases “Akaram” and “Doc Abu,” was known to have aided Abu Sayyaf members wounded in clashes with government troops, the SAF said.
