Singson advocates economic zones to boost jobs and national security

Senatorial candidate Luis "Manong Chavit" Singson has called for the nationwide expansion of economic zones, presenting them as vital tools for economic growth, job creation, and national security. His platform, focused on establishing economic zones in every province, echoes recent remarks by Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, who emphasized their role in ensuring stability during crises.

Building Economic Zones for Balanced Development

Singson, a seasoned businessman and public servant, envisions economic zones as the backbone of a thriving Philippines. Speaking at recent engagements in Subic Bay and La Union, Singson shared his plans to foster industrialization and attract foreign investment to underserved areas.

“We need to bring jobs closer to the people,” Singson emphasized. “Economic zones will ensure that Filipinos can find opportunities at home rather than looking abroad, while also driving industrialization and balanced regional development.”

His proposal echoes Enrile’s insights on the strategic importance of ecozones. Enrile recently highlighted that the Philippines’ 427 economic zones serve as vital hubs for progress and national security. He stressed that these zones, particularly those in less vulnerable areas like the eastern seaboard, could ensure economic stability during wartime or calamities.

“Manong Chavit’s initiative aligns perfectly with the vision of creating a resilient and inclusive economy,” Enrile remarked.

Learning from Experience, "May isang Salita"

Singson’s track record lends credibility to his proposal. As chairman of the LCS Group of Companies, he successfully developed two major economic zones in South Korea, including the K-Beauty Industrial Complex and the Mangsang District 1 development project. These initiatives have not only driven industrial growth but also highlighted the potential for Philippine economic zones to attract global investments.

“I’ve done this in Korea, and I know it can be done here,” Singson said. “These zones are not just about economics—they’re about empowering communities and building a nation that’s prepared for future challenges.”

A Response to Criticism

Singson also responded to criticisms that ecozones, like CEZA, have been misused or associated with illegal activities such as POGOs (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators). He expressed support for Enrile’s call to protect and enhance ecozones, noting that mismanagement or dismantling of these zones would have severe consequences for both the economy and national security.

“We need to focus on maximizing the potential of these zones rather than tearing them down,” Singson said in his reference to red tape. “Economic zones are not just business ventures; they’re strategic assets that can safeguard our future.”

Enrile had similarly defended CEZA, noting that it was established not only for economic development but also as a strategic safety measure in times of war or calamity. He highlighted the need for more ecozones along the eastern seaboard, which he called “anchors of safety.”

Vision for a Resilient Philippines

Singson’s proposal to expand ecozones reflects a broader strategy to position the Philippines as a global industrial hub while addressing local challenges like unemployment and underdevelopment. By focusing on ecozones, Singson aims to spread economic opportunities more evenly across the archipelago and strengthen the country's defense against external threats just as Enrile proposes.

“Economic zones are more than job generators—they’re lifelines for our nation,” Singson said. “Together, we can build a Philippines that’s strong, self-reliant, and ready for whatever lies ahead.”

With his proven experience in economic development and a clear alignment with the national vision of progress and security, Manong Chavit’s campaign underscores the transformative potential of economic zones in shaping the Philippines' future.
