DESPITE the glass encasement, some devotees managed to climb and touch the image of the Black Nazarene to the chagrin of church officials who prohibited such acts during yesterday’s Traslacion. Politicians told: Don’t politicize Feast of Black Nazarene

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) issued a stern reminder on Friday against politicians and those seeking to run during the 2025 polls to refrain from politicking the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

In a message to reporters, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia reminded that Traslacion is a holy celebration.

“A holy celebration like Traslacion in Quiapo should not be politicized even though it may not be the beginning of the campaign and they are not yet considered candidates,” Garcia said in Filipino.

The Feast of the Black Nazarene, celebrated every 9th of January, draws millions of devotees from Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

“Let the faithfuls take this time to meditate and intensify their devotion. It's just one day compared to 90 or 45 days of campaigning,” Garcia continued.

“It is easy to forget and forgive those who blaspheme these days, but it is difficult to forget when the election comes,” he added.

The 90-day campaign period for the national candidates—senatorial aspirants and party-list organizations will begin  11 February.

Meanwhile, local bets will have 45 days to campaign from 28 Match to 10 May.
