NAGOYA, Japan — Allain Ganapin of taekwondo and Alyana Nunez and Wilson Sante Jr. of athletics fell short in their medal bids on a quiet Wednesday for the Philippines at the 5th Asian Para Games here.

Ganapin bowed to Iranian Paralympic silver medalist Mahdi Pourrahnamaahmad in the quarterfinals of the men’s K44 under-80-kilogram division before losing to Uzbekistan’s Otabek Amatov in the repechage, ending his hopes of a bronze medal.

Nunez, a double gold medalist at the ASEAN Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand last January, finished fourth in the women’s discus throw F11 with a heave of 28.77 meters at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.

Rosalie Torrefiel placed eighth in the same event with a throw of 21.58 meters.

Sante also narrowly missed the podium, finishing tied for fourth with Bangladesh’s Md Salem Reza in the men’s high jump after both cleared 1.83 meters.

At press time, the Philippines remained in 15th place with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

In wheelchair fencing at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center, Wilfredo Bungayong II lost to Indonesia’s Didit Diantoro, 9-15, in the men’s epee Category A Round of 32.

Marlyn Garrucho also bowed out early, falling to Uzbekistan’s Gulzorakhon Rakhmanova, 8-15, in the women’s epee Category A.

In cycling, Nikko Peralta and Patrick Lee clocked 28:51.38 and 29:56.56 to finish 12th and 15th, respectively, in a field of 24 in the men’s C1-5 time trial in Izu.

Peralta, Lee and Paralympian Arthus Bucay will have one final opportunity to deliver the country’s first cycling medal at these Games when they compete in the men’s C4-5 road race on Friday at the Cycle Sports Center on the Izu Peninsula. The trio is expected to have a stronger chance of reaching the podium in the road race.

In the wheelchair basketball classification round for fifth to eighth places at the Aichi International Arena, the Filipinos pushed favored China to the limit before absorbing a heartbreaking 59-61 defeat.
