MISAMIS ORIENTAL — Police rescued a newborn baby found abandoned at a cemetery in Barangay North Poblacion, Medina, Misamis Oriental, on Saturday, 17 October.

Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office director Col. Al Abenales said personnel of the Medina Municipal Police Station responded to a report about an abandoned infant at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Initial investigation showed that witnesses heard a baby crying inside the cemetery. Upon checking the area, they discovered the newborn wrapped in cloth and immediately alerted authorities.

Responding officers coordinated with concerned agencies to ensure the infant's safety and provide immediate medical assistance.

The baby was brought to a hospital in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, for medical examination and treatment.

Police said the newborn had reportedly been left at the cemetery earlier that morning, although the circumstances surrounding the abandonment remain under investigation.

The infant was subsequently referred to the Medina Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) for appropriate care, custody and intervention.

"Every child deserves love, care, and protection. We remind everyone that abandoning a child puts an innocent life at serious risk. If you are facing difficulties in caring for a child, please seek assistance from your family, local social welfare office, or concerned authorities. There are proper and lawful ways to seek help," Abenales said.

The provincial police office assured the public that authorities are investigating the incident in coordination with relevant agencies while safeguarding the infant's welfare and privacy.
