What happens when you cross-examine internet-famous relationship frameworks with real-life science? For Filipino poet and indie singer-songwriter Toni Panagu, it results in a catchy new single.

Panagu explores the complexities of modern romance in his latest release, "Ang Sarili Nating Theory (Sariling Version)." The track puts a playful spin on the many theories people use to make sense of relationships, weaving references to Darwin, Newton, and Galileo into lyrics that ultimately arrive at a simpler idea: for the narrator, the world revolves around one person.

The song began with a casual conversation between Panagu and fellow singer-songwriter Ian Quiruz at a cafe in April. The two discussed relationship trends making the rounds online, including the "Taxi Cab Theory" and the "Rice Cooker Theory." What started as an exchange about internet-fueled ideas turned into a songwriting session, bringing together scientific principles and a light melody.

Although the current release is Panagu's solo take on the track, he remains hopeful that listeners will eventually get to hear a full collaboration with Quiruz.

"Super thankful ko kay Ian for supporting this solo version, ‘Sariling Version’ muna, pero hopeful kami na someday we could put out the full collaboration for all to enjoy."

The track first gained traction following a live performance at Retro Coffee House PH in June. A TikTok teaser featuring its introduction later surpassed 1.2 million views, prompting requests from fans for an official release. Since then, listeners have shared their own lyric videos and covers online, helping the song spread before its debut.

Beyond its clever references, "Ang Sarili Nating Theory" carries a message about letting love exist without overanalyzing it. The song's closing lines bring that sentiment home:

"The song ended this way: ‘Sa dami-rami ng teoryang nauuso utak nati'y di malabong malito, tayo'y obrang natatangi at tiyak na mamamalagi ay pag-ibig kong tapat at totoo.’ Gusto lang namin ipaalala sa lahat na sometimes, you don't have to intellectualize what you feel. Love beats all theorizing and strategizing. Minsan kailangan mo lang to i-feel."
