The Social Security System (SSS) on Friday, 16 October, assured members and pensioners that their contributions remain protected despite stock market fluctuations, stressing that its investments are managed prudently to sustain long-term benefit payments.

In a statement, the state pension fund said it invests primarily in companies with strong earnings records and stable business performance, avoiding speculative investments that could expose members' contributions to excessive risk.

SSS said its portfolio is diversified across several asset classes to minimize losses and maintain financial stability.

The agency also highlighted its dividend income from equity investments, which contributes an estimated P9 billion annually to its net income.

While stock prices may fluctuate, SSS explained that declines in market value do not automatically translate into realized investment losses.

A paper loss occurs when an investment's market value falls below its purchase price but the asset has not been sold.

SSS said such declines do not necessarily mean that members' contributions have been lost or that pension payments are threatened.

However, the value of investments remains subject to market conditions.

Benefit payouts rise

SSS reported that benefit payouts increased by 19 percent in the first half of 2026, reaching P173.45 billion from P145.73 billion during the same period last year.

The pension fund also implemented the second tranche of its Pension Reform Program, providing P7.4 billion in additional benefits to 4.1 million pensioners.

The additional payments are intended to help retirees cope with inflation and rising energy expenses.

SSS said it regularly reviews its investment strategy and follows the Social Security Act of 2018 and internal investment policies to protect the pension fund.

The agency maintained that prudent fund management remains essential to ensuring the continued payment of pensions and other benefits to present and future members.
