The Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant in Batangas City has maintained 25 years without a recordable safety incident involving harm to people or a significant process safety incident, Prime Energy said.

The plant, located in Tabangao, has sustained its Goal Zero safety record since 28 September 2001, through continuous operations, major maintenance campaigns, facility upgrades and increasingly complex activities supporting the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project.

Prime Energy president and CEO Donnabel Kuizon Cruz said the achievement reflects the facility’s ability to sustain gas production and carry out increasingly complex operations while maintaining safety standards.

Significant operational achievement

“Reaching 25 years of Goal Zero is a significant operational achievement, particularly for a facility that has supported continuous gas production, major maintenance activities, and increasingly complex operations over the years,” Cruz said.

The company said its safety record is supported by strong leadership, open communication and a shared health, safety, security and environment commitment among employees and contractors. Regular safety huddles, observation cards, incident reviews and an annual Safety Day reinforce proactive risk management.

Scheduled maintenance shutdown

Earlier this year, Malampaya completed a scheduled maintenance shutdown covering both its Shallow Water Platform offshore Palawan and the onshore gas plant. The work was completed on schedule with zero recorded incidents despite its scale and complexity.

The milestone comes as Prime Energy advances Malampaya Phase 4, which aims to develop additional indigenous natural gas resources. First gas is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, with the project expected to strengthen domestic supply and extend the field’s productive life.

Contributes to energy security

Malampaya has supplied indigenous natural gas to power generation facilities in Batangas since 2001, contributing to the country’s energy security.

“As we advance Malampaya Phase 4 and undertake increasingly complex activities, maintaining these standards becomes even more critical. Our priority is to deliver the next phase of Malampaya safely, reliably, and with the same operational discipline that has sustained the project for 25 years,” Cruz said.
