Newcomer ClearSkiiin bucked a sluggish start and rallied to a 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-16, victory over 3B for a resounding debut in the Spikers’ Turf Season 10 Invitational Conference on Thursday at the Ynares Center-Antipolo.

The UV Smashers, formed just a couple of months ago, struggled to find form in the opening set but came out firing on all cylinders after recalibrating and regrouping in the next three frames to join Alpha Insurance and defending champion Criss Cross atop the standings.

Ruvince Abrot led the way for the ClearSkiiin, the second team put up by Savouge owner and head coach Sydney Calderon, with 13 points in 10 kills, two aces and a kill block.

“We’re very happy we won right in our very first game. We really had a slow start but in the second set we’re able to adjust and take control of the game,” Abrot said.

Jayrack dela Noche added 12 points built on eight attacks, three kill blocks and an ace while Jester Bornel finished with 12 points for the UV Smashers.

Louis Gamban chipped in 10 points and setter Klint Mateo orchestrated ClearSkiiin’s relentless attacking with 26 excellent sets.

The UV Smashers broke the second set wide-open with a telling run to erect a double-digit advantage.

Harry Ocay kept the Event Masters within striking distance in the third frame but costly errors allowed ClearSkiiin took full control of the match the rest of the way.

“I think it was exciting, you know. I love the fact that, number one, we were able to get everyone in. And when I say that, it’s that, up to this point, I’ve had a difficult time trying to figure out a starting six, a starting seven,” said UV Smashers head coach Joe Bangit, who had 11 players contributing points.

“But the fact that the entire team was in and we got a win shows how much work they really put in during practice. So, I’m really proud,” added the Filipino-American tactician.

Ocay paced 3B with a game-high 23 points on 22 kills and one kill block.

Ralph Cabalsa added 10 while Carl Berdal scored eight for the Event Masters, who failed to take advantage of the UV Smashers’ 29 errors.
