Lawyer by day, comedian by night. For Edward “Ed” Chico, the two jobs are not as different as they seem.

Both require timing, a good read of the room and knowing when to make a point. On 17 December, Chico will put all three to work at the Newport Performing Arts Theater for Laugh Control: The Atty. Ed Chico Show.

The pre-Christmas stand-up show will see Chico take on everyday Filipino life, current affairs, politics and, naturally, the legal profession.

Law has long been part of Chico’s comedy. His experiences as a lawyer, professor and media personality have given him plenty of material, particularly when it comes to politics and the issues Filipinos argue about online and off.

Chico knows that getting a laugh is one thing. Trying to say something while getting that laugh is another.

“Sa comedy in general, pag gusto mo magpatawa, madali. Pero if you want to make a statement, you want to get across certain points, mahirap siya i-combine,” he said.

It is a challenge that becomes even trickier when politics enters the conversation. Chico’s comedy often plays with issues already familiar to audiences, allowing the joke to land without losing the point behind it.

For Laugh Control, expect new material, personal stories and his takes on the personalities and issues currently dominating conversations.

Before comedy became part of his résumé, Chico was already moving between law and media. A journalism graduate of UP Diliman, he has written for newspapers and magazines, hosted radio programs and appeared on television and radio as a legal expert and political analyst.

His legal career is just as extensive. He has worked as a firm partner, civil and commercial law professor, bar reviewer and consultant.

Stand-up eventually became another part of that career, and in 2020, Chico was named among ANC’s 10 funniest Filipinos.

This December, he gets a bigger stage to make his case — although this time, the verdict he will be looking for is laughter.
