Beach volleybelles face huge odds

No pressure.
Decorated Alas Pilipinas beach volleyball duo Sisi Rondina-Rosales and Bernadeth Pons are tempering expectations in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
The tandem makes its debut in the Asiad against Bangladesh’s Most Lucky Khatun and Most Sabina Khatun today at the Hekinan Ryokuchi Beach Court.
Game time is at 12 p.m. (Manila time).
“We just want to enjoy this experience. Pons is reminding me to just be consistent in our teamwork and just show our competitive spirit,” Rosales said.
The pair hopes to earn the same success they had last year in a historic gold medal haul in the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
“It’s a different feeling because this is the Asian Games. So, facing new opponents and new challenges. We just look forward to see good results and play healthy,” Rosales added.
The SiPons tandem has been preparing for the Asiad for months and even took a leave of absence from their respective clubs in the Premier Volleyball League.
As part of their build up, Rosales and Pons participated in different international tournaments and even bagged silver medals in the FIVB Beach Pro Tour Futures last August and in the AVC Beach Tour Pingtung Open last June.
“Of course, going into the Asian Games, our goal is a podium finish. We believe we can achieve that but it won’t be easy. We’ll work hard for it.” Pons said.
After Bangladesh, the Philippine pair will take on Kazakhstan’s Merey Kozhakhmet and Laura Kabulbekova on Friday to wrap up Pool E play.
