Li Deru, 62, from Shantou, Guangdong province, China, cannot speak standard Mandarin and cannot recognize the English alphabet. Yet, her social media account boasts of over 800,000 followers who admire her for being able to sing more than 100 songs in six different languages — English, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Hindi and Italian, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reports.

Known as @Auntie Ru on socmed, the sexagenarian, who speaks only Teochew, a Southern Min Chinese language spoken by roughly 10 million people in the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong, and millions more in the overseas diaspora, can sing Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” Justin Bieber’s “Baby” and South Korean singer Rosé’s “APT,” which was liked 1.6 million times, according to SCMP.

The granny’s power to memorize foreign songs was driven by her penchant for English songs and English-language films. Her talent is also remarkable despite her only completing four years of primary school and never having studied English.

Meanwhile, a funder of a contest to develop the technology for interspecies communication has predicted that humans would develop that technology by 2030.

Private equity billionaire Jeremy Coller, who funds the Coller Doolittle Challenge, based his prediction on the power of AI.

“Because AI is so fast, I have absolute conviction we will crack the code by 2030,” he said, referring to animal communication, New York Post (NYP) reports.

AI is being used to determine the meaning of animal calls. Scientists play back recorded animal calls to see its reaction which is then interpreted.

Biologist Vittorio Baglione, who has spent his career cataloging the calls of carrion crows, was blown away by how AI models could help sort his recordings and point out commonalities in specific cries. Among the crow calls he has identified is the bird’s cry for help to defend a nest.

Baglione, however, warned that being able to talk to animals when it becomes possible could stress the animals, disrupt their social environment, and cause conflicts between them.
