The Chinese government is promoting marriage by expanding the number of venues where couples can register their nuptials.

Last year, civil affairs bureaus started providing marriage registration services outside their offices. On top of about 1,800 off-sites, other places where couples could avail of marriage registration services were old temples in Beijing and Nanjing, a metro station in Anhui province, a nightclub in Shanghai, the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangdong province, the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Zibo City, and a Postal Savings Bank of China branch in Tianjin, according to South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The hospital in Zibo City also offers premarital examinations and preconception guidance for newlyweds.

The various marriage registration sites have helped raise the number of marriages in the country by 657,000 to 6.76 million last year, SCMP reported.

Meanwhile, a cinema in northwestern China is not just a place to watch movies.

In April 2025, the Lumiai Cinema in Xian, Shaanxi province, started offering a new service to boost attendance at empty screening halls on weekdays, its manager, surnamed Xu, told SCMP.

Patrons can take a nap in the theater on any working day after they sign up for a cinema membership priced at 39.9 yuan a month.

Members can nap on one of 76 adjustable reclining seats in two halls from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., SCMP reported.

One worker said napping in the cinema was better than at work because it was easier to fall asleep in the dark hall. For those who need disposable eye masks and earplugs, these can be bought for 5.9 yuan each.

The reclining seats are comfortable and spacious and come with complimentary blankets, coffee, and other beverages.

For patrons who snore, they can nap in the Massage Seat Hall, where there are fewer people due to its narrower seats.
