BISHKEK (AFP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks Monday as leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization gathered for a two-day summit focused on regional security and a multipolar world order.

Xi said Russia-China ties had become “more solid” and their prospects “will be even brighter,” while Putin said cooperation was “successfully developing on all fronts.”

The meeting comes amid the continuing wars in Ukraine and Iran and growing tensions with the West.

Putin also met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying Moscow was “following the path” toward resolving the Ukraine conflict. US-brokered peace talks remain stalled.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to meet Putin, told Modi that continuing the war with the United States was not in Tehran’s interest.

“We continue to strive for a path of agreement and understanding, and we believe that continuing the war is neither in our interest, nor in the interest of the region,” Pezeshkian said.
