KATSEYE channeled their inner Megara at Disney’s D23 Expo, delivering a surprise performance of “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” from Hercules during the Disney Legends ceremony on Sunday (August 16) in Anaheim, California.
The girl group — Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel, Daniela Avanzini, and Yoonchae — took the stage at Honda Center to honor Disney legend Susan Egan, the original voice of Megara in the 1997 animated classic Hercules.
With its iconic sass, romance, and unmistakable Megara attitude, “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” was the perfect song for KATSEYE to bring to life. Susan originally performed the beloved song as Megara in the animated film.
Sophia Laforteza was absent from the performance as she remains on a temporary hiatus from the group while focusing on her mental health.
Megara is a Theban princess and the first wife of the hero Heracles (Hercules) in Greek mythology. Disney’s Megara, however, became an iconic character in her own right through her sarcastic wit, guarded heart, and complicated romance with Hercules in the 1997 animated film.
The character has also inspired other popular adaptations, including Megaera, one of the Furies in the video game Hades.
A clip of KATSEYE’s Megara-coded performance can be watched above, while the full performance will be available to stream on Disney+ when the Disney Legends awards ceremony drops on the streamer later tonight (August 16).
Susan remains one of Disney’s most iconic voices, having originated the role of Megara in Hercules and the role of Belle in the Broadway adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.
Last year, Susan was also named the official godmother of the Disney Cruise Line ship Disney Destiny, which “features spaces inspired by her legendary roles, including the beautifully themed Cafe Megara.”
“I dreamed of Broadway, as many do, and Disney gifted me that,” Susan shared in a statement via D23. “I had no idea at the time that the gift would prove to be open-ended – the company has allowed me to redefine myself multiple times and given me platforms to expand my reach and to participate in the storytelling that inspires and brings joy to so many. I am forever grateful for that.”
