Most of us believe earning more will make life easier. When our salary increases, we expect to save more, worry less and prepare better for the future. But sometimes, the opposite happens.

Your income goes up, yet there is still not enough money left at the end of the month. Why?

Because when our income grows, our lifestyle often grows with it.

The raise that disappeared

I once spoke to someone who was doing well in his career.

“Chinkee,” he told me, “I earn much more than before, but I don’t feel like I have more money.” So we looked at what had changed.

His old car became a newer car. Simple meals became expensive restaurant dining. Weekend trips became more frequent. A P200 coffee no longer felt expensive.

None of these seemed like a big problem. But together, they were eating up almost every increase in his income.

His salary had grown. Unfortunately, his expenses had grown, too.

The lifestyle upgrade

we don’t notice

This usually happens slowly. When you were earning P40,000, you may have been happy with a simple lunch. At P80,000, food delivery became normal. At P100,000 or more, a newer car, better gadgets, premium subscriptions and vacations started feeling reasonable.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of your hard work. The danger begins when yesterday’s luxury becomes today’s necessity. Soon, you are earning more but also needing more to maintain your lifestyle.

Give your future a raise, too

Whenever your income increases, don’t only upgrade your lifestyle. Upgrade your savings, too.

If you receive an additional P10,000 every month, maybe you can save P5,000 and enjoy the other P5,000.

Do that consistently, and you are not only enjoying your success today. You are preparing for the day when your regular salary stops coming.

Will your savings be ready?

Today, you may be at the peak of your career. But one day, you will retire. The question is: Will your savings be ready when you are?

Retirement may feel far away when you are busy paying for your home, children, travel and everyday life. But the best time to prepare is while you are still earning well.

You don’t have to choose between enjoying today and preparing for tomorrow. You can do both.

Because one day, your greatest luxury may not be a new car, a bigger house or another vacation. It may be having enough money to enjoy your retirement without having to depend on your children or worrying about the next bill.

Don’t only upgrade your lifestyle. Upgrade your future. Start preparing for retirement while your income is still working for you.
