Blackwater displayed stubborn persistence in overhauling a 15-point third-quarter deficit in a morale-boosting, 106-100, reversal over Phoenix to snap a three-game skid in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors’ Cup Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Bossing refused to fold to the same team that defeated them at the end of the first round, charging to a decisive 11-0 run in the final three minutes of the payoff period for a satisfying revenge victory and perfect start in the last half of the group stage.

“Very happy that we got this win. It’s a good start for the second round. Hopefully, we could push more and get some more wins,” a relieved Blackwater head coach Pat Aquino said after his wards accomplished a payback from a 93-102 loss to the Fuel Masters last 28 July.

In a battle of runs, the Bossing had reserve fuel in the tank as Phoenix faded late to level their win-loss slate to 3-3 in Group B.

Trailing, 92-93, after Ricci Rivero completed a three-point play with 3:51 left, Blackwater went on an 11-0 tear capped by Troy Malilin’s two free throws for a 103-93 cushion with 53 seconds left. The Bossing held on to hand the Fuel Masters their second loss in six games.

“I thank the guys, of course. They never stopped playing. Credit to the bench players that I had to pull out like Jed Mendoza, Troy Malilin, Jack Cruz-Dumont. Everybody helped out. We contained them, we played good defense,” Aquino said.

Kentrell Barkley led Blackwater with a double-double of 34 points and 16 rebounds to go with three assists, two blocks and a steal.

Sedrick Barefield scored 11 of his 26 points in the final period after going scoreless in the third and added three rebounds and three assists for the Bossing. RK Ilagan chipped in 15 points.
