Driving the Country’s Energy Transition
As the Department of Energy pursues its goal of increasing renewable energy’s share in the country’s power generation mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040, MGEN continues to play a key role in advancing the Philippines’ clean energy transition.
Renewable energy remains the fastest-growing segment of MGEN’s generation portfolio, with the company steadily expanding its investments to help meet the country’s growing energy requirements while supporting a more sustainable and resilient power system.
Leading this transformation is MTerra Solar, MGEN’s flagship renewable energy project and the world’s largest operational integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) facility.
As of end-May, Phase 1 of MTerra Solar was nearly 90% complete, with 2,090 MWdc of installed solar PV capacity, 741 BESS units deployed, and 89 500-kV transmission towers completed. Since its energization in March, the facility has already supplied 93.3 GWh of clean energy to the Meralco grid.
“This is a major milestone delivered by our employees and contractors. Projects of this scale usually take years to develop, build, and bring to the grid. But MTerra Solar began delivering energy in just 16 months after groundbreaking -- proof that Filipinos can build big and build fast,” Rubio said.
Building on this momentum, MGEN continues to expand its renewable energy pipeline. The company has secured land options covering more than 1,000 hectares for future projects and remains on track to increase its generation capacity to 6,800 MW in the near term and more than 10,000 MW by 2030.
Beyond solar generation, MGEN is strengthening grid reliability through battery energy storage.
In May, the company energized the first phase of its 25-MW (56.44-MWh) Battery Energy Storage System project in Toledo, Cebu, enhancing energy security and grid stability across the Visayas. A second phase is targeted for completion in 2027 to further reinforce the region’s power system.
While renewables remain a key growth driver, Meralco is also preparing for the next generation of energy technologies.
As the Philippine government targets the integration of 1,200 MW of nuclear capacity by 2032, Meralco is also studying emerging solutions, including small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), as part of its long-term strategy to build a more diversified, resilient, and future-ready energy portfolio.
Through its Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST) program, launched in 2025, the company is preparing for the responsible integration of nuclear power into the country’s energy mix.
NEST is anchored on a three-pronged approach that involves assessing the feasibility of rehabilitating the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), exploring the development of a greenfield utility-scale nuclear facility, and studying the potential adoption of small modular reactors.
Recognizing that the country’s energy transition will require not only technology but also highly skilled professionals, Meralco continues to invest in developing Filipino talent through Meralco Power Academy’s Filipino Scholars and Interns on Nuclear Engineering (FISSION) program, which began in 2023.
FISSION supports Filipinos to become nuclear professionals through overseas education and training. To date, 12 scholars have been deployed to undertake specialized studies and train in universities and institutions in the United States, Canada, China, France and South Korea.
So far, two scholars under its FISSION Scholarship Program, Amiela Nicodemus and Gener Atienza, graduated with Master of Engineering degree in Nuclear Energy Systems from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
“As the Philippines explores nuclear energy as part of its long-term energy strategy, we will need Filipino engineers and professionals who understand the science, the discipline, the safety culture, and the global standards required for nuclear energy,” Aperocho said.
“As we look forward to the graduation of the rest of our scholars in Canada, France, Korea, and China, we are already preparing for their reintegration into our nuclear adoption program as we monitor the exciting developments in the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology happening nowadays,” he said.
