Alex Eala has had a short but eventful week in the Philippines.

The 21-year-old reflected on her brief stay in the country following a historic campaign at the Wimbledon Championships, where she became the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16.

Eala, the Rafael Nadal Academy alumna, will now head to the United States to resume her campaign at the Washington Open on 27 July.

“What a week it has been,” Eala posted on her social media account on Saturday.

The Philippines rolled out the red carpet for Eala despite her short visit.

She visited Malacañang Palace last Monday, where President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed her and awarded her a Presidential Citation in recognition of her achievements.

Eala also met and thanked her supporters during a fan event at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City last Wednesday.

“Maraming salamat sa suporta, sa pagpupuyat, sa pagdarasal. I’m doing my best to make you guys proud and I hope sana subaybayan nyo pa rin ako in my next matches and in my next journey,” Eala said.

With her homecoming over, Eala will now turn her attention to the North American hard-court swing as she and her team prepare for the final stretch of the season.

“My focus right now is to prep for the US Open. Some good tournaments. And I have yet to reconvene with my team,” Eala said.

“I’m sure next week we will have a good meeting, and maybe set some more goals after that.”

Before the year’s final Grand Slam, Eala is scheduled to compete in two Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 tournaments.

She will play in the Canadian Open from 1 to 13 August before competing in the Cincinnati Open in Ohio from 13 to 23 August.

Apart from the US Open, Eala also confirmed her commitment to represent the Philippines in the 20th Asian Games, where she hopes to win the elusive gold medal.

“If everything falls into place, the Asian Games is in my plans. It brings a different vibe than when I compete in the WTA Tour and I always, always enjoy it, especially when I have teammates, when I have Filipino teammates,” Eala said.

“The SEA Games last year was an incredible experience for me. I had so much fun. I’m really excited, I’m super motivated and I’m going to give it my best.”
