San Miguel Beer eyes a second straight win in a showdown against skidding Terrafirma in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors’ Cup clash today at the Ynares Center-Antipolo.
Tipoff time for the Group A pairing is set for 5:15 p.m., before the main game at 7:30 p.m., which pits rebound-seeking Group B teams Rain or Shine and Meralco.
The Beermen are expected to see the return of big man June Mar Fajardo and head coach Leo Austria after skipping their opening-day assignment last Tuesday.
Fajardo, the nine-time Most Valuable Player, sat out San Miguel Beer’s 123-109 drubbing of guest team Macau to rest a minor elbow injury he sustained during his stint in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier third window in Perth, Australia, two weeks ago.
Austria, on the other hand, was out due to an illness.
Despite Fajardo’s absence, the Beermen easily crushed the Giant Pandas with import George King dropping 30 points, new addition Jerick Ahanmisi scoring 16 and Rodney Brondial taking over in the center position with a career-high 25 rebounds and 10 points.
“If we can hold this (momentum), we have a good chance for this conference to be one of the top teams,” San Miguel assistant coach Peter Martin said.
Ahanmisi will meet his former team for the first time after the Dyip traded him for Juami Tiongson, Chris Miller and the Beermen’s second-round pick in the 2028 Draft.
“It’s going to be fun. I’m excited to play against my former team. And I’m just going to go there and do my best,” said the reigning PBA three-point shootout champion and first-round pick of Magnolia in the Season 46 draft.
Ahanmisi played the first two conferences of Season 50 with Terrafirma after being traded by the Hotshots for the playing rights of Javi Gomez De Liano.
Terrafirma has lost two in a row -- both games it dropped by missing potential game-winners.
After running over Titan Ultra to open their campaign, the Dyip absorbed heartbreaking losses to NLEX, 100-101, and Converge, 103-105.
“It’s been our problem lately. We get ourselves in a big hole before mounting comeback,” said Terrafirma coach Ronald Tubid, whose team almost pulled off a 23-point comeback against NLEX and 16 against Converge.
“Hopefully, we learn from that. From the start we have to be aggressive, and the players know that,” Tubid added.
Meanwhile, the Bolts and Elasto Painters are out to dodge a 0-2 hole, hoping to turn their fortunes around.
Meralco is reeling from a 97-98 loss to Converge sans injured import Jordon Varnado while Rain or Shine is coming off a 108-131 drubbing at the hands of Blackwater in their opening matches.
The Bolts will parade Antonio Hester as a replacement reinforcement.
On the other hand, the Elasto Painters will march into battle without former team captain Gian Mamuyac, who was shipped to Phoenix in exchange for future draft picks.
