There’s no scary endgame moment for NLEX this time.
The Road Warriors built a huge lead in the first half and maintained their distance the rest of the way in a 135-100 rout of listless Titan Ultra for a third straight win in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors’ Cup Group A on Tuesday at the Ynares Center-Antipolo.
Save for some lapses in the third period that brought its 23-point lead to a single digit, NLEX held the driver’s seat for the whole 48 minutes on its way to a 3-0 win-loss record.
Locals Robert Bolick, Schonny Winston and Kevin Alas set the tone early in the game for the Road Warriors with their energy and aggressiveness, complementing the usual numbers of import DeQuan Jones.
Winston flirted with a double-double of 30 points and nine rebounds while dishing out six assists and shooting 12-of-18 from the field. Bolick added 29 points on an 11-of-15 field goal clip with seven rebounds and four assists while Alas had 14 markers.
“I think we’re getting a lot of contributions from different guys. Obviously, Berto and Schonny are a big part of what we do. I think they’re two of the two young guards in the league,” said NLEX head coach Jimmy Alapag, who survived a three-game swing in five days for a great start holding the reins.
“But I thought their aggressiveness early in the game set the tone.”
Jones had 22 points for the Road Warriors, who opened a 59-36 advantage with over two minutes left in the second quarter.
Joshua Munzon gave the Giant Risers a sliver of hope in the third quarter after nailing a three-pointer that cut NLEX’s lead to just 72-63 with 7:36 left. The Road Warriors, however, stepped on the gas once again and outscored Titan Ultra, 38-18, in the payoff period.
The Giant Risers finally fielded an import after going all-Filipino in their first two games but even the presence of Tirrell Brown did not spare Titan Ultra from absorbing a third straight blowout defeat in as many games.
Brown had 27 points and 10 rebounds while Roi Sumang and Munzon got 18 and 17 markers, respectively.
Meanwhile, Converge tries to bring the momentum of its opening win as it shoots to make it two in a row against dangerous Terrafirma today at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Tipoff time is set at 5:15 p.m. followed by the Group B encounter between back-to-back victory-seeking Phoenix and debuting Meralco at 7:30 p.m.
The FiberXers fashioned out a 105-74 whipping of import-less Titan Ultra last Sunday with reinforcement Jalen Hudson leading the way with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists in just 24 minutes of play.
“Everybody knows we had some issues with our import that time. We didn’t get what we expected from our import and some of our players were still new to the team. Those were the two reasons, import and chemistry,” Converge coach Delta Pineda said.
“But right now, we’ve developed our chemistry.”
Although coming off a 100-101 heartbreaker over NLEX last Sunday, the Dyip (1-1) could use the momentum of their botched comeback from 23 points down to get back on the winning track.
On the other hand, the Fuel Masters eye a second straight win against a Bolts side hoping to start on the right foot.
Phoenix showed resilience to come back from a 16-point deficit to stun Magnolia, 98-86, behind import BJ Johnson’s rousing debut of 34 points and 10 rebounds.
Meralco brings in reinforcement Jordon Varnado, who already saw action for the Bolts last year in the Basketball Champions League Asia, averaging 19.7 points, 10.0 boards, and 3.3 assists.
“He’s quite skilled. He can hit the three, nice midrange pull-up, explosive, runs the floor. Played in Europe and Italy. We’ve seen him up close. Hopefully, we continue the quality play,” Bolts coach Luigi Trillo said.
