With the recent success of Filipino tennis star Alex Eala, a lawmaker has filed a house resolution to recognize her outstanding achievements and overall impact on Philippine recognition on the global stage.
In her resolution, Laguna Rep. Maria Lourdes Garcia Matibag stressed that the recent display of Eala at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships was a feat that deserved to be honored as she became the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16 of the historic tennis tournament.
Garcia likewise sought to commend the 21-year old sensation for bringing the national flower, sampaguita, to the international stage through a hair accessory that she wore throughout the competition.
“For every Filipino who excels on the world stage, there is a story of resilience, humility, and love for country. Alex Eala embodies these values,” she said.
“By proudly carrying the sampaguita with her at Wimbledon, she reminded the world that no matter how far we go, we always carry the Philippines in our hearts,” she added.
The solon further stressed that the goal of her submitted resolution was to appreciate the importance of preserving the nation’s cultural heritage.
Given her insight on the matter, she sought for Eala to be recognized as the Honorary Sampaguita Goodwill Ambassador of the House of Representatives with an intent to bring renewed appreciation for sampaguita.
“The sampaguita is more than our National Flower. It represents purity, humility, resilience, hope, and unwavering love of country, the very qualities that Alex Eala has demonstrated throughout her journey,” she said.
Aside from commending an established athlete, Garcia underscored that another goal of her resolution was to inspire the youth in not only pursuing their dreams, but to take pride in the nation’s symbols.
She stressed that Eala served as an example that even when the achievements of Filipinos extend past the national level, one’s own success and patriotism are two variables that can go “hand in hand.”
“Every victory becomes even more meaningful when it carries the story of the Filipino people. We hope this resolution inspires more Filipinos to proudly wear, celebrate, and share our culture with the world,” she stressed.
