Long before she became the title character of a musical, Annie Batungbakal was a cultural icon born from a song.
The fictional character first captured Filipino audiences through Hotdog's 1978 hit "Annie Batungbakal," inspired by the everyday lives and nightlife of young Manileños during the Manila Sound era. The song's popularity later inspired the 1979 film starring Nora Aunor, followed by the sequel Bongga Ka 'Day.
Now, Annie returns to the stage through Bongga Ka, 'Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical. But according to director Chris Millado, audiences shouldn't expect a stage adaptation of the films.
During the press conference held at The Grand Bar and Lounge, Newport World Resorts, on 8 July, Millado reframed the entire concept, revealing that the musical draws its inspiration directly from Hotdog's songs rather than the movies.
Although the cast and creative team revisited both films during development, Millado said the production ultimately charted its own path by drawing directly from Hotdog's music rather than adapting the movies.
"Those two films were really part of our viewing. I'm a fan of both films, especially the first one. But we decided to base it on, and be inspired by, the song 'Bongga Ka, 'Day!' We really looked into the song and made it the fuse, or the trigger, to build the world," he said.
Instead of retelling a familiar story, the creative team has built an entirely new narrative around the themes found in Hotdog's music, exploring identity, self-expression, and the search for belonging beneath the glitter of the disco era.
Leading the cast is Atasha Muhlach as Annie Batungbakal. Joining her are Sam Concepcion, Jeff Moses, and Anthony Rosaldo as Romer Pasion, KD Estrada as Burn, Jackie Lou Blanco and Ring Antonio as Aurora Pasion, alongside John Lapus, Air Paz Pablico, Akie Cedilla, Gerhard Krysstofer, Yani Lopez, Andrea Babierra, and Dindo Divinagracia.
Bongga Ka, 'Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical opens this September 2026 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. Exclusive waitlist pre-selling runs from 8 to 9 July, while general ticket sales begin on 10 July through TicketWorld outlets and the Newport World Resorts Box Office.
