DAVAO CITY — Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo "Pulong" Duterte called for a fair and professional impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte as proceedings formally began.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Duterte said the case should be decided based on evidence and facts.
"Let the evidence speak. Let the facts prevail. Let the truth come out," he said.
He added that, like many Filipinos, he hopes the proceedings will be conducted fairly, professionally and without unnecessary distractions.
"I hope this process finally allows the truth to emerge from the mountain of accusations, speculation, political narratives and noise that have surrounded this issue for months. The Filipino people deserve facts, not rumors. Evidence, not innuendo. Truth, not propaganda," Duterte said.
The lawmaker also said Vice President Sara Duterte has made it clear that she is prepared to face the charges against her.
He expressed confidence that she would be given the opportunity to answer every allegation in the proper forum and through due process.
Duterte said he remains hopeful that the impeachment trial will not only resolve the issues raised against the vice president but also reveal the motivations behind the accusations.
