Team Philippines kept its eyes glued to the target and added five gold and two silver medals at the close of the 2026 Singapore Youth Archery Championships at the Bukit Gombak Stadium on Sunday.
The final-day barrage in the individual events capped an impressive performance for the Filipino archers in the event that drew competitors from China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Laos, Philippines and Singapore.
After three days of action, Team Philippines, under world-class coaches from South Korea, will come home with 13 golds, 10 silvers and seven bronzes, and left a strong message that is definitely on the rise.
Bagging gold medals yesterday were Mariano Matteo Medina in the U15 Recurve men’s, General Marc Bangoy in the U18 Recurve men, Leila Jell Cano in the U18 recurve women, Mateusz Vaughn Johnson in the U18 Compound men and Abigail Lim in the U21 Compound women. Chass Mhavien Colas and Zac Zayco won silvers in the U18 Recurve men and U18 Compound men, respectively.
“Perfect bullseye,” said Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio, who spent time watching the live feed and monitoring the action yesterday morning from Manila.
“This is the resurgence of Philippine archery,” said Gregorio, adding that the PSC will continue to provide the World Archery Philippines headed by Bing Reaport the full support it needs to continue its dive.
It all started last year when the PSC tapped the services of Korean coaches Ryu Su Jeng, who steered South Korea to five gold medals in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, and Hong Sung Chil, a gold medalist himself in the 1999 World Championships.
“We would like to thank PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio and the PSC commissioners for their unwavering support. This is the first international tournament for our youth team and we had a very impressive haul of 30 medals (13 gold, 10 silver and seven bronze),” Reaport said.
“After months of strategizing and planning, we are now seeing the light of this rebuilding journey. Philippine archery, with the help of the PSC, is in the right direction. We are seeing our next generation of archers from our grassroots program,” he added.
“It’s time to bring back the glory days of Philippine archery,” said Reaport, adding that members of Team Philippines will be flying home tonight from Singapore.
"Para sa bayan ito," he added.
