Authorities have added homicide and reckless imprudence resulting in homicide to the list of recommended charges against former Ateneo de Manila University head coach Tab Baldwin and his staff following the 8 June drowning of two student-athletes, police said Wednesday.
Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico said the new complaints are in addition to alleged violations of Republic Act 11053, also known as the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018.
Two counts of each charge were recommended to cover the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Aurora province.
Morico said the complaints have been referred to the Department of Justice for evaluation and case build-up.
Investigative details were shared with Baterbonia’s family during a meeting at the police headquarters at Camp Crame in Quezon City. Morico personally met with Baterbonia’s parents, Rene Sr. and Rovelyn, and their eldest son, Ruveyan, who were accompanied by legal counsel.
“The purpose of the meeting is two things: one, to inform them of the result of our investigation because they have the right to know,” Morico said. “Second is to assure them that in all stages of the prosecution, if this one goes to trial, the CIDG will be there to continuously follow up this case.”
In addition to Baldwin, police recommended charges against strength and conditioning coaches Grant Dearns and Caesar Vincent Elumba; assistant coaches Dean Caesar Castaño, Sandro Nicholas Soriano, and Reynaldo Jacinto Jr.; student managers Paolo Manuel Adevoso and Andrew Lorenzo Salud; physical therapist John Eric Rueca; and utility workers Aris Pronce and Joel Rapa.
